Social Anxiety

Social Anxiety Disorder DSM-5 definition:

  • Marked fear or anxiety about one or more social situations where the individual is exposed to possible scrutiny by others.

  • Persistent fear of acting in a way that will be negatively evaluated, leading to embarrassment or humiliation.

  •  Social situations almost always provoke anxiety.

  • The fear or avoidance significantly impairs social, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. â€‹

Other Notable Features

People with SAD may:

  • Have physical symptoms, like sweating, blushing, trembling, or rapid heart rate.

  • ​Experience behavior changes, like speaking in a soft voice, or avoiding eye contact. 

  • May use safety behaviors to cope in social situations, like always using headphones in public. 

  • ​Analyze own behavior after social situations for flaws in their interactions.
